Why a single lab result rarely tells the full story

It's natural to look at a single lab result and ask, “is this good or bad?” But for many biomarkers, the more useful question is: “is this moving in the right direction, compared to where I was?”
Reference ranges are population averages, not you
A printed reference range describes where most healthy people in a population fall — it isn't personalised to your baseline. A value that's technically “in range” but has been steadily drifting toward the edge of that range over three reports tells a different story than the same value appearing for the first time.
Labs and formats change
