Understanding HbA1c: what it measures and why it moves slowly

HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) is one of the most frequently tracked biomarkers for blood sugar control — and one that behaves differently from a same-day glucose test.

What it actually measures

Glucose in your bloodstream attaches to haemoglobin inside red blood cells. Because red blood cells live for roughly three months, HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar exposure over that period — not your level at the moment of the test.

Why it moves slowly

A single day of unusually high or low eating won't meaningfully shift HbA1c, unlike a fasting glucose reading, which can vary significantly test to test. That makes HbA1c a smoother, longer-window signal — useful for spotting a gradual trend, but slow to reflect a recent change.

Reading it over time

Because it changes gradually, HbA1c is a biomarker where a multi-report trend line is especially useful — a single reading tells you where you stand, but a series of readings over months or years tells you whether things are moving in the right direction.
